Understanding "Mil" Thickness
in Plastic Products
When shopping for plastic bags, sheeting, or poly tubing, you'll often come across the term "mil" to describe thickness. It's a standard measurement in the packaging industry, but it can be a little puzzling at first. Here's the simple explanation:
• A "mil" is one-thousandth of an inch So, 1 mil = 0.001 inches.
• For example:
> A 3.5 mil product is 0.0035 inches thick.
> You might also see this written as:
• 3 mil = .003"
• 2.25 mil = .00225"
How to Picture Mil Thickness
These measurements are tiny, so they can be hard to imagine. To put it in perspective, think of everyday sandwich bags or resealable zipper bags – they're usually around 1.5 to 2 mil thick.
